A Big Interview
and the average is the best
Hi all! We hope you are happy and healthy out there!
The Big Interview
Yep, as the headline says, a big publication by the name of USA TODAY interviewed me about the Bunsen rescuing Bailey story which I reposted around Christmas time.
The story blew up on Instagram, but particularly Facebook, and then a couple of news agencies reached out and asked for my permission to share it, which I did. Then I was contacted by USA TODAY about a month ago saying they wanted to interview me about the story.
That happened on Monday! HA! So you’ll have to keep your eyes peeled!
The reporter was super friendly and asked great questions about the whole ordeal. He said that it wouldn’t lend itself to print, but it will be up on their digital platforms and social media sites. Very cool, but the coolest part is retelling how our brave Bunsen found Bailey alone and cold in the creek.
Hot Cold Hot Cold
This week has been playing with our emotions like a yo-yo. Early on it was wicked cold in the mornings — -20°C and colder — with blasting winds that made going outside feel like being stabbed with icicles.
Then in the middle of the week it gradually warmed up until yesterday when it was a balmy +10°C. We went on a walk with Wag and Walk for the first time in months and Bernoulli and Beaker had a great time.
THEN early this morning a weirdo blizzard moved in with rain which turned to sleet which turned to snow coming in sideways. The snow is gone but the wind remains.
What a wild week of weather.
The Bernoulli-Cam
Kris picked up the successor to our GoPro, which sadly hasn’t seen much action in the last three years. We got it around nine years ago and used it regularly for about three of those years. However, it was clunky to edit footage from it, and the technology for taking great video quickly fell off as our cellphones caught up and surpassed it.
We now have an Insta360 — something Adam recommended we get — and both he and I have been messing around with it. It has an app which allows editing easily, and I am blown away by the video quality and how you can turn the camera around in 360 degrees.
I got a harness for Bernoulli and slapped the camera on him and it took some really awesome shots. The harness was also excellent — much better than the sloppy GoPro one Bunsen wore.
So, with luck, it will become a part of our content going forward! Yay!
All The Animals Are Good
This week we have no wild standout stories or wacky hijinks to report. Brix is still his cute self and growing like a weed (he’s almost 8 pounds!). He is jumping around the house being super adorable, but that’s nothing new.
Bernoulli is his goober self, working with Brix to eat things that his cat-burglar buddy knocks off the counter. Beaker is ever the sweetheart. Bunsen is doing great and, aside from being stiff after walks, his health is just fine for an old guy.
Sometimes when I struggle to come up with things to talk about in our newsletter I remember that the ordinary is just fine. It’s like day after day our mundane is a masterpiece.
Hold on… that’s the lyrics to The Ordinary by Alex Warren.
Anyways, you get the gist of it. Things being boring, with all the pets filled with calm and love, is the best part of having pets. The quiet cuddle on the couch, a cat pouncing on a toy, Bunsen licking Bernoulli’s head because they love each other — all these things will be memories that will flood back into my brain years from now.
I remember the mundane with Kahlan like it was yesterday. I also remember the craziness — but the average and simple things are those that make dogs and cats special.
They elevate just sitting on the couch into something almost spiritual as they snuggle in close.
Though they have no words to speak that I could understand, we understand each other as completely as those who do have words.
Ok, I don’t know if that’s a quote I stole, but it conveys the message of this week.
The Science Pawdcast
It is NO secret that I am very much anticipating Project Hail Mary which opens next week. Kris and I broke down some of the science on our podcast episode this week (spoiler free! - we only talked about the science that was in the trailer) - and we also talked about that viral post about cats in Sweden!

SO MUCH GOOD STUFF THIS WEEK!!
I'm not crying; you're crying. The videos and words had my eyes leaking down my cheeks. My hubby asked me what was wrong; I told him that nothing was wrong, everything was PERFECT. A simple email from you became a spiritual moment for me. God bless EACH of you.
Gord must be doing great; no news is good news, as they say.

Love that song “Ordinary” by Alex Warren. I was crying when you added that song to Bunsen in a blizzard on Insta. So beautiful!! It’s fitting and conveys how you (and us followers) feel when seeing the joy’s pets bring to our lives. Even if mundane there’s something spiritual about it.
Can’t wait for the USA TODAY article. Been checking on their website daily!!🥰congrats again. WHOO!
Also can’t wait for project hail Mary. Just ordered the book! Will read after I see the movie!!📕🚀💗
