Hi all! We hope you are happy and healthy out there!
So the warm weather I mentioned last week has continued and there is a full scale melt on in Alberta, Canada. I hear tell that the big city south of us, Calgary, is literally snow free. We still have a TON of snow here on the farm, but where the sun shines the most it is GONE leaving behind vast slush mountains and quicksand drifts.
I made the foolish decision to take Bernoulli and Beaker on a walk midweek without my snow shoes and got about 5 minutes in and had to abandon walking further. We have SO much snow on the creek banks that when the snow pack loses integrity, it’s impassible. I sank to my waist and Bernoulli was floundering, so I parked my butt high up on the bank and we just had fun as the sun set. Beaker walks on the snow like an elf - I’m not sure how many nerds out there are familiar with Lord of the Rings lore about elves, but they walk with light step so faint they cant walk atop deep snow. There is a scene in Fellowship of the Ring where Legolas is walking on the snow while the rest of the Fellowship looks like Bernoulli and I. That’s Beaker. Being a pocket sized retriever, she just scoots over snow without sinking like the golden elf she is.
Bunsen continues to improve, with noticeable improvements both Kris and I saw this week. I don’t want to say he is back to 100%, but he is walking with way more confidence, slipping way less, and his tippy tapping gait is longer and at times not noticeable. Kris has been taking him out into the snow while I take the other two dogs on a walk and just letting Bunsen be Bunsen. He knows he can’t go when he’s on the leash and is content to lay and play in the snow. She always sends me the photos of him, and they update in the cloud while I’m out and I literally just about broke down seeing our majestic old guy in the snow. He just loves it so much.
When we had the cold snap there were three people who didn’t come on the walks. Bunsen, obviously because he is healing and resting, Kris because she quit the winter, and Ginger - it was just too cold for her. So the heartbreaking thing is every time I got suited up I had sad face Bunsen watching us and then Ginger would hop into her cat-backpack. So I had two animals staring at me hoping to come on adventures. Luckily, with the warmer weather Ginger has been coming in the backpack, but also spending some time in her Catio. So with Bunsen in the snow and Ginger coming along, in the moment, things are just great.
Oh, Kris says I should mention I was in a magazine. The ATA (Alberta Teacher’s Association) did a big story about me (and really Kris and the dogs too), which highlighted my work as a teacher, but also the growing reach we have on social media. They sent a reporter and professional photographer and I think the article was done really well. That being said, the dogs were the star and Bunsen came with me for the photoshoot (this was before we knew he had a slipped disc- but he did great!)
Here it is: (yes I have a dopey smile)
In other news:
We should have hands on with the Bernoulli stuffie this week or early next week! Though there is a lot of uncertainty with possible tariffs coming in Kris and I have decided to move forward with a Bernoulli stuffie pre-sale campaign. If you are new, we did this for the Bunsen 2.0, Beaker and Ginger stuffie. Think of it like a Kickstarter. We make sure that everyone who supports us in the pre-sale gets the best deal with the most extras. With luck we will have that ready for mid-March.
The new format on The Science Pawdcast is getting some good feedback. Having Kris join the team has gotten us some really wonderful emails and feedback, plus not having a guest each week makes some of the episodes a bit shorter, which we have also heard good feedback on!
The Deal of the Week! Last week I launched “The Deal of The Week” campaign, where for 1 week we will bundle some items together for a REALLY low price. It was SUPER successful and we are excited to continue it! This means that I will be sending a Deal of The Week newsletter out midweek announcing it - so I hope that doesn’t make folks too upset with extra stuff in your inbox!
On to the rest of the newsletter!

Welcome spring! So glad Bunsen continues to improve. How long does it typically take for the snow pack to melt up there?
