Hi all!
We hope you are happy and healthy out there!
Our family had this week off for spring break, and it was a great time to recharge our batteries. The push to the end of last week was pretty hectic, and Kris and I were definitely running on fumes.
During our week off, Kris and I worked together on the book Fun Facts With Bernoulli, and I’m excited to say we got almost all of it done! Kris is a master at proofreading—something I’m sure many of you have noticed isn’t exactly my strong suit (especially in this newsletter!).
We also ordered some new stickers featuring super fun new comic art and even planned out a possible summer trip!
As the week came to a close, I was frantically building some last-minute costumes for Adam and his girlfriend for Comic Con. I had hoped to have more complete costumes ready, but I broke a gear on my 3D printer, and the replacement part didn’t arrive until just two days before the event. Needless to say, it was down to the wire, but I managed to make a modified "Jeff the Landshark" costume for Annalise and an updated Loki costume for Adam. The costumes turned out great, and the two of them were a huge hit—kids LOVED the landshark, and adults kept thinking Annalise was Katy Perry’s Left Shark!
Kris and I went as Minsc and Jaheira again, since the costumes are fun to wear (and we get huge reactions from fans of Baldur’s Gate 3). Plus, they’re comfortable to wear all day—unlike the Mando armor, which gets super hot and heavy after about three hours.
(Quick context: Minsc and Jaheira are returning characters from Baldur’s Gate 1 and 2. Jaheira, being a half-elf, has aged from a young woman to an older mom in the 100 years of game time between 1/2 and 3. She’s now considered the “mom” of the group, and many people ran up to Kris to hug her and call her "Momma Jaheira." Jaheira is a powerful druid—wielding the forces of nature, sarcastic, funny, and pragmatic. Minsc, meanwhile, was turned to stone and preserved, which explains his survival until BG3. He’s a ranger who chose a hamster, Boo, as his animal companion. Minsc is super strong, silly, extremely kind-hearted, but not the sharpest. He’s known for shouting things like “BUTTKICKING FOR GOODNESS!”, “SWORDS, NOT WORDS!”, and “YOU POINT, I PUNCH!”, which I shouted in his accent to the delight of the crowd.)
The highlights for me included the amazing talent on display in Artist’s Alley—I picked up some new art and goodies that I love to display around our house and in my classroom. We also had the chance to meet Adam Savage from Mythbusters!
Wow, what a kind, generous, and eloquent man—easily one of the best celebrities I've ever met. Our photo with him is epic, but honestly, I loved our conversation at his booth even more. His joy for building and learning is so inspiring and infectious.
If you’re wondering where the dogs were—Bunsen, Beaker, and Bernoulli had a sleepover at Waggles! Kris and I stayed overnight in Calgary because the Minsc bald cap takes a couple of hours to put on and isn’t exactly driving-friendly. The dogs did well overall, but Bunsen had some anxiety during parts of the day, which broke our hearts. In the future, we’ll probably have someone come watch him at home since he’s much more comfortable there.
A cute story: To help Bunsen feel better, the staff put Beaker in his area, and he calmed right down—his sister made him feel so much better! Waggles also kept Bunsen separated from the other dogs (due to his recovery), but they reunited all three of our pups in a small off-leash area. They happily greeted each other and promptly fell asleep in a big dog pile. So sweet! We were told that Bernoulli was showing off a bit with Bunsen around (maybe a male thing in a new place?), while Beaker was an absolute dream dog—friendly with everyone, a great listener, and just the sweetest. Beaker really is the glue that holds the dog family together.
Oh, and Ginger… what about her? She had the house all to herself! Kris got a fancy automatic feeder with a camera, so we could check in on her. Ginger was super happy to see us when we got home and, in her own way, thrilled to see her dog friends again.
Luckily, she didn’t bite me this time! (Last time I was away for four nights, she jumped into my lap and playfully bit me, either because she missed me or was mad I left. This time we were only gone one night—much better!)
As we wrap up: next week is looking super busy with human stuff! I have a meeting with the Calgary Science Fair Committee—they reached out to ask if I would MC the event, which is such an honor. Also, The Dodo will probably release our video next week, so watch for that! On Saturday, I’m helping our district promote Smile Cookies with a Science Show at Tim Hortons (Smile Cookies are these delicious cookies where all proceeds go to support kids). Finally, we’re testing a new kitty litter for a company that’s hoping to partner with us if we like it!
Busy—but at least I’m not rush-fabricating shark collars and Loki staffs! HA!
The Science Pawdcast This Week!
Our show this week has 3 science news items - with some very topical information about the rising autism rates - and the reasons why as explained by the experts who study it. Though my favourite story is the Dire Wolf story - not because I agree with it, but it was an interesting breakdown of some advanced science with both good and bad consequences.
Two Of Our Favourite Posts!
Fun Facts With Bernoulli!
That’s it! We will have a Deal of the Week Next Week…so look for the information Wednesday!
My capstone class in college for mechanical engineering was mythbusters based. First assignment was to watch an episode and answer some questions. Then we had to do a project in the spirit of mythbusters. I loved that professor.
Adam definitely seems like a kindred spirit to you as he also inspires people to see a different side of science. It can help you solve problems and answer questions while still being super fun. Mommyfav is a bit of the Jamie to your Adam!
Looks like such a great time! Your costumes are always so amazing. Sorry your 3D printer part broke.
Idk who Mr. Savage is but he looks like one cool dude by the photo! What fun!😄
Glad the three B’s did pretty good at Waggles. If you ever need a sitter for Bunsen, lmk. I’ll be there for in a minute to sit the Big Bear! Lol🥰💓❤️🐾🐾
